Along the Bay of Kaštela stretches the town Kaštela, which was formed from seven settlements, each with its own castle-fort: Kaštel Sućurac, Kaštel Gomilica, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Novi and Kaštel Štafilić. Built mostly in the period from the 14th to the 16th century, the castles are well preserved to this day and give these small villages a particular charm.

Trogir nobleman Stjepan Štafileo chose to build his fort on a sea cliff in Kaštel Štafilić in 1508, which is today known as the Rotondo castle. In 1512, Trogir nobleman Pavao Antun Ćipiko had his castle built in the shape of a square tower, around which Kaštel Novi has developed over time. Landlord Coriolano Cippico built his castle as a fortified palace on the cliff itself and connected it to the mainland by a drawbridge, thereby creating a square in front of it called Brce. In Kaštel Lukšić the fort was built by Mihovil Rosani, while the defensive fort in Kaštel Kambelovac by Split nobles Jerolim and Nikola Cambi. Benedictine nuns completed their fort in 1545 in Kaštel Gomilica on a reef called Gomilica. The oldest defensive tower dates back to 1392 and is located in Kaštel Sućurac. Its construction was commissioned by Archbishop Gualdo of Split.

The Legend of Romeo and Juliet

Did you know that Kaštel Lukšić has its very own Romeo and Juliet? It’s about two young people from feuding noble families, whose tragic love story ended just like in the famous Shakespearean drama. In their honor, the event “The True Legend of Miljenko and Dobrila” is held from July 25th to July 31st, with an attempt to brand Kaštela as the Croatian Verona. The event is a comprehensive collage of various thematic activities and costumed spectacles, from dramatic performances to poetry evenings and entertaining Renaissance-themed nights. The opening takes place on July 25th in K. Lukšić at the Vitturi Castle.

Kaštel Lukšić

The central and largest of the seven castles, Kaštela, is situated on the border of the former Trogir and Split estates. It was named after the Lukšić estate and was also called Kaštela Vitturi, after the Trogir noble family that built it at the end of the 15th century.

Trogir noblemen, Nikola and Jerolim Vitturi, obtained permission from the Venetian Doge in 1487 to build a seaside castle for the defense of their families and peasants. The castle was constructed in the opulent Renaissance palace style and was completed in 1564. Today, the renovated Vitturi Castle houses the Museum of the City of Kaštela, the Tourist Board of the City of Kaštela, and other cultural institutions. The castle serves as a cultural center for the city, hosting exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, and more.

Around the castle, a village with defensive walls was constructed. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, built in 1530 in the Gothic style, stands at the northern edge of the old village. The new parish church was constructed from 1776 to 1817 in the late Baroque style. It houses a true treasure trove of art, including paintings and sculptures.

The pioneer of tourism in Dalmatia, Dr. Šoulavy from Prague.

In Lukšić, you can also find the Tataglia – Ambrossini castle, where Dr. Henrik Šoulavy from Prague opened the first guesthouse in 1909. Enchanted by the beauty of the seven Kaštela, he said about them: “The Kaštela Bay is indeed a wonderful shell where you can find pearls alone. These small places are indeed stone pearls, seven compact entities between the vast sea and lush fields.”

The Legend of Love - Miljenko and Dobrila

In a quiet bay between Kaštel Lukšić and Kaštel Stari, amidst lush Mediterranean vegetation, the remnants of the fortified castle of Rušinac stand above the sea. It was built in 1482 by Mihovil Rosani, a commoner from Trogir. Next to the castle, there is a small church with a bell tower in the form of a spire. It serves as a reminder to visitors of the tragic ending of a love story from 1681, immortalized in folk songs. This is the tale of the love between Miljenko and Dobrila.

Botanical Garden of Ostrog Elementary School.

In Kaštel Lukšić, you cannot miss the Botanical Garden of Ostrog Elementary School, whose development began in 1976. Spread across an area of 4 hectares around the school building, it hosts over 1400 plant species from all around the world, predominantly from the Mediterranean and subtropical regions.

Book your accommodation in Kaštel Lukšić, enjoy the sea and sun on the pebble beaches of Šumica, Šoulavy, or Ostrog. Take a leisurely stroll along the coastline, visit Kaštel Vitturi, and have a great time at the local fishing festivals and concerts in Kaštel Lukšić!
